ABOUT

Nob Hill is named after its affluent settlers from the late 1800s. “Nob” comes from Nabob, a Hindu word describing a wealthy, powerful person. The “Nobs” included Mark Hopkins, Charles Crocker, Collis P. Huntington, and Leland Stanford. They were known as the Big Four, four entrepreneurs that invested in the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad. In 1882, Robert Louis Stevenson described the neighborhood as “The hill of palaces.”
