Architecture, Planning, and Preservation Professionals: A Collection of Biographies

Architecture, Planning, and Preservation Professionals: A Collection of Biographies is a written compilation of concise histories intended to describe the lives and work of individuals who have contributed to the built environment of San Francisco, California, and/or the United States.

The Historic Preservation Commission adopted this historic context statement on October 18, 2023.

This compilation is a living document that will continuously be edited and expanded upon. Department staff maintains updates to the biographies. Updates will be posted to the PDF biographies and to the Property Information Map twice per year.

In addition to highlighting the education, firm history, biography, and project lists of various Bay Area design professionals, the document includes an evaluative framework developed in order to provide standards for consistent, informed evaluations of the city’s various architecture professionals. If a property is mentioned in a biography or in a project list, this does not automatically mean the property is a Category A, Historic Resource Present. A formal evaluation must be conducted using these evaluative frameworks.

Beyond considerations of career tenure and number of properties designed or constructed, additional guidance for determining the status of female professionals and professionals with racial, cultural, or ethnic associations were developed as part of this project.
