San Francisco American Indian Historic Context Statement
The Planning Department, in collaboration with the American Indian Cultural District and the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone is developing the San Francisco American Indian National Register Multiple Property Document and Historic Context Statement (AIHCS).
The goal of the AIHCS is to document the history of American Indians in San Francisco from the pre-contact period to the present day. It will highlight important places, stories, and cultural traditions with significant meaning to the local American Indian community.
Work on the project started in 2022, supported by funding from the California Office of Historic Preservation. Oral histories from Native community members in San Francisco will shape and guide the project. These stories follow the tradition of passing down history through spoken word. The AIHCS will help the community and Planning staff understand and protect Native culture and places in San Francisco.
The project will result in a National Register Multiple Property Document (MPD) when completed. This document will help people in the community to nominate important sites to the National Register of Historic Places. The Planning Department will also use the AIHCS to recognize and better understand places that are important to the American Indian community in San Francisco.
